Clydesdale Bank Plaza, the landmark office building in central Edinburgh, is up for sale with a rumoured price tag of £50m, reports The Scotsman.

It is home to some of the city’s biggest firms, including Clydesdale Bank, the headquarters of oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy, and some of the operations of financial services group State Street. Law firm Burness is also based there.

One property source described the 100,000sq ft building as a “genuine trophy asset”. Another predicted it would be sold to a financial institution or a high net worth individual.

This commercial building lies across the road from Standard Life’s HQ. The poprerty is sited around the corner from Scottish Widows’ head office in the heart of the capital’s booming financial services district.

The building was completed in 1997 at a cost of 33m and was originally called Exchange Plaza. It was built by a joint venture between Cala and Morrison Group, which later became AWG Property.

In 1997 Fred Goodwin, then chief executive of Clydesdale Bank, decided to relocate the bank’s Edinburgh-based employees to the building.
