Concrete Floors, The Latest Trend in Building Construction

15 Oct 2019

Businesses with concrete floors have long been either warehouses, factories or other facilities that abused their floors and couldn’t afford to put in something better. However, concrete floors are becoming popular in all types of businesses, and many of the reasons are not based in economics.

Let’s learn why concrete floors are the latest trend in building construction.

The Many New Styles Available

Concrete floors now come in far more styles than the grey slab you’re familiar with. They can be mixed with colorants to create rich brown floors that resemble wood floors or aggregate that makes it look like marble. The floor can be installed with patterned molds to resemble stone floors for a fraction of the cost. And if you want to change the appearance of the concrete, you can paint it.

The Sheer Flexibility

Existing concrete floors can be enhanced with stains, polishes and paints. You can also install a concrete overlay over other types of hard floors to mask damage or upgrade the look. A side benefit of concrete floors is that it resists wear and tear. It will resist spilled water if sealed and scratches from pets’ claws or heavy loads dragged across it. This means you won’t have to repair the floor after years of heavy use the way you would linoleum or carpets.

Its Environmental Friendliness

One of the biggest reasons why businesses are opting for concrete flooring is because it is so green. Concrete is easily recycled, so it doesn’t deplete resources the way vinyl floors would. It requires less energy to produce than other types of floors. It is often made locally. If you decide to rip out the concrete slab, the concrete can be recycled and added to new aggregate to make a new floor.

Concrete also improves indoor air quality since it resists mold and mildew. It won’t attract insects like termites the way wood floors might. Concrete won’t emit odors, though floor treatments like stains might. However, concrete can be finished with zero-VOC sealers. Nor can concrete floors absorb odors. This ensures that the flooring won’t hurt air quality whether it traps pet dander, chemicals used in the workplace or insecticides used for pest control. Another benefit of concrete is that it doesn’t give fleas and ticks a place to hide, so you won’t need to use nearly as many chemicals for pest control.

The Convenience Concrete Floors Bring

Concrete floors are incredibly easy to clean. You can sweep it, mop it or vacuum it. You can use almost any cleaner you’d like to treat stains from oil to pet messes. If you want to dampen sound or increase comfort in a room with concrete floors, you can add throw rugs or pet beds.

The Return on Investment

Concrete floors are relatively cheap to install. It is also durable and long-lasting. It withstands wear, tear, use and abuse. It will resist stains. It is less likely to be damaged on exposure to fire or flood. This means that concrete floors are the longest lasting floors you can put in. If you repurpose the room, you aren’t left with oddly colored carpets or upscale tiles in your new storage room or home office.
