Built in 1806 on Edinburgh’s famous Royal Mile, our historic pub has plenty of tales to tell!

The pub is named after one of the city’s most famous sons, Deacon William Brodie. He was one of the inspirations behind Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde.

Born in 1741, he was a deacon of a group of skilled carpenters known as the Guild of Wrights. By day, he was a respectable citizen and a member of the town council but, by night, he became involved in gambling and drinking.

To pay off his growing debts, he had to resort to burglary and a life of crime. By 1786, he had a small gang of criminals working in the city.

Throughout this Lawnmarket pub you can see references to Brodie and his double life. This Royla Mile tavern is also worth a visit to view the fascinating, decorative wooden ceiling.
