Public Art – Scottish Poets : Edinburgh Park

Poetry Bus Shelter Edinburgh Park

The poetry bus shelter is the latest instalment in the award winning Edinburgh Park Public Art Programme. This is the third bus shelter of its kind on the park; the first was awarded the Jeu d’Espirit by the Royal Fine Arts Commission Trust in June 2001.

The bus shelter, designed by Linda Tolmie, celebrates the work of Scottish Poets William Drummond, Edwin Morgan, Iain Crichton Smith and Robert Burns. The poems are displayed in glass blades, each standing a meter and a half tall and a meter wide behind the bus shelter, and are lit up at night. The bus shelter is fitted with seats so that commuters can ponder on the poetry whilst waiting for their bus. The poems will be changed periodically to provide new muse for park employees.

Two of the selected poets, Edwin Morgan and Iain Crichton Smith, also feature as Edinburgh Park Herms, which were unveiled earlier this year.

Ron Butlin lives in Edinburgh and is a full-time writer, poet and journalist. His work has gained several SAC Book Awards and been widely translated. He has given readings in Nigeria, Mauritius, and Central and Eastern Europe with the support of the British Council. At present he teaches Creative Writing at St Andrews University.
