Edinburgh Academy Science Centre

The Edinburgh Academy first opened its doors to pupils on 1st October 1824. The Founders of the Academy were motivated by the highest educational ideals. As the Edinburgh New Town grew, its leading citizens were not satisfied with mediocre education in overcrowded schools. They resolved to create a new school of their own in which excellence could be achieved, and they gave their academy a motto that reflected their aspirations – ” Always Excel.”

Today that school, the academy still stands for excellence. The objective is for each child to be the best that he or she can be, and both the scale of the school and the method of working is dedicated to that end.

Famous alumni include Robert Louis Stevenson, James Clark Maxwell and Michael Blair. Sir Walter Scott was a founding director of the Academy.

The academy is a co-educational school for 2 to 18 year olds. It is located on two sites near the centre of Scotland’s capital.

A Scottish education is a well-rounded one and the academy is passionate about educating the whole child. The school aims for academic excellence and this culminates in the sitting of the acclaimed Highers and Advanced Highers (Scottish Qualifications Agency). This is complimented by a full range of co-curricular activities.

Fee assistance bursaries are available to ensure wide access and the school also provides scholarships to reward and encourage excellence in the fields of academia, art, sport and music.

A stunning architectural blend of traditional and modern buildings, the academy has retained its ionic original Main Hall whilst additions of a purpose-built Science Centre, Performing Arts Centre, state-of-the-art Nursery and two astroturf pitches have been made. The most recent addition has been the McTavish Wing at the Junior School. Significant investment will continue to ensure the best of facilities for our pupils.
