Rock’s, Dunbar, East Lothian – Review
Rocks Dunbar Restaurant
view from Rocks Dunbar Restaurant
Driving along the Dunbar coastal road in the dark The Rocks stands out as a welcoming beacon. The warm glow pulls you in.
The friendly staff have all been at The Rocks for the past six and a half years, quite unusual in the fast-moving world of catering.

Donald’s at Aberlady, East Lothian – Review
Malcolm Duck’s sprawling whitewashed Inn located on Aberlady High Street is as charming and welcoming as Malcolm himself. Never a dull moment in neither building nor personality, never any doubt about whose guest you are. A great place to either while away the hours on a rainy afternoon or a dark wintery night – either in the well stocked bar or sampling some of the tasty offerings on the menu.
Donald’s Aberlady restaurant review – 9 Oct 2010

Candle’s, 21 Candlemakers Row, Old Town, Edinburgh – Review
The service was overly attentive to the point of being smothering; we were unable to have a conversation over dinner without being interrupted every few minutes. Meals were bland and simple. One meal was different to the menu description.

Meals were accompanied by a cheap iceberg lettuce salad and tomato wedges, which looked as if it had come straight out of a bag from the local supermarket. I am unsure if a qualified chef is employed at this restaurant because the meals were so poor in quality. Do yourself a favour and cook a meal at home instead. Lisa-Maree Campbell – 8 Sep 2010

Waterside Bistro Reopens, Haddington – Review
Now open again with really very good food. The dining areas have been refurbished making the whole place much brighter and more inviting. Adam Cochrane – 7 Aug 2010

Waterside Bistro, Haddington – Review
Great that this classic restaurant has reopened, under its old name, but prices quite steep (for East Lothian) at around £13 for mains, still good food + service. Linzie Stewart – 5 Aug 2010

The feel of the place is good, light and airy with great views east over the gardens.

Ducks at Aberlady, East Lothian – Review
All the tables were clad in white linen and furnished with large candles and one small duck ornament…the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed though not informal or over familiar…I couldn’t resist ordering the duck, thinking I had to eat duck while at Duck’s.
Ducks at Aberlady restaurant review – 29 Mar 2010

The Linton Hotel, East Linton – Review
Traditional East Lothian Inn. The owners previously owned and operated Haldanes in Edinburgh for the last 13 years and took over The Linton Hotel in Jan 2009. We can warmly recommend The Linton Hotel for both formal occasions and informal dinner. Every town should have a place like this.

Voodoo Rooms – 25 May 2009
“The Voodoo Rooms in central Edinburgh is warmly recommended for an informal evening out rather than sporting diamonds and tiara.”

Edinburgh Restaurant Reviews – 2009

Goblin Ha Hotel, Gifford – 11 Oct 2009 – Review
Our latest visit to the Goblin Ha Hotel found really good friendly service, and solid menu. However the food didn’t hit the high notes. The steaks weren’t really tasty and a little chewy. New potatoes came plain with no butter, parsley, etc. The ice cream brownie cake also lacked taste and felt like it had been made too far in advance. The place was busy though which shows they must be doing something right, certainly the atmosphere is warm and the staff looked after us on the night so we continue to recommend the Goblin Ha.

Verandah Restaurant, Edinburgh – 4 Sep 2009 – Review

On a recent business trip to Edinburgh, I was craving for some delicious indian food, and I have to say I was happy when a colleague recommended Verandah Restaurant in Dalry Road, for a memorable dinner!
We ordered the Chana Puree and the Sheek Kababs for starter, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed these. There are a lot of exquisite entrees for the main course. The prices are pretty reasonable, and the portions are substantial too. Lamb Korma, Murgh Massala, Shatkora Chicken and the Methi Gosht were particularly good. Peshwari Nan was excellent.
The service was fast and efficient, and the waiting staff was courteous and educated about the menu options.

Pizza Express, Edinburgh – 17 May 2009 – Review
“We weren’t served starters until 50 minutes had passed, drinks took ages and there were no nibbles and no bread. We asked for the window to be opened and were met by a sulky face and no answer, the food was good but service dreadful”.

Fisher’s In the City, Edinburgh – 7 Nov 2008 – Review
“The food was excellent and the service was satisfactory”.

Centotre, Edinburgh…once again – 25 Aug 2008 – Review
“the worst service I have ever received in any restaurant”

Centotre, George Street, Edinburgh…and yet again – 15 Aug 2008 – Review
“I cannot remember having ever had such bad quality Food and Service in my life…I think it gives a very bad image to the very friendly Scottish People”

Centotre, Edinburgh…yet again – 30 Jun 2008 – Review
“We arrived and were ignored for about 10 minutes, asking for menus from two waitresses they both ignored us…the waitress was extremely rude and did not apologise, simply got a very dirty look”

Goblin Ha’ hotel, Gifford – 1 Jun 2008 – Review
New ownership in 2008, we risked a visit and found it back to normal, friendly service, a fairly substantial and interesting menu (not just country pub grub), clearly the managers are making a real effort, now recommended again

Osteria, High St, North Berwick – 4 Jun 2008 – Review
Small Italian joint, packed with a generation older than mine, décor could be spiced up but food excellent, service with a smile, it felt like being back in Rome, genuine Italian dishes and custom. Prices very reasonable – recommended.

The Outsider, Edinburgh -13 May 2008 – Review
Ok, so we went back to this joint that on our first visit gave us lunch menus then on ordering not a single item was available….we now recommend this restaurant

Centrotre, Edinburgh…again – 12 May 2008 – Review
Food OK eventually but service terrible. Quiet Monday night. Arrived at 9pm and finally got my steak at 10pm. Had to send it back as they hadn’t cooked it properly (was still very rare). All in all, not impressed and would not go again. Colin Truran

Edinburgh Restaurant Reviews 2007

Edinburgh Restaurant of the Year 2006-07 : ROTI – Review
New Town restaurant

Midlothian Restaurants Review – 16 Nov 2007: Chubara, Musselburgh – Review
Located at the top floor of The Quayside entertainment venue the views across the sea are lovely. The menu is pricey though, around £11 to £15 per main course.

Fishers City Restaurant Review – 5 Oct 2007: Fishers in the City, Edinburgh – Review
For some reason we were pushed into the furthest corner. Service was abysmal, eventually (an unforgivable 15 minutes after arrival) a waitress arrived and took a drinks order. About ten minutes later she came and took a food order, then asked for our drinks order again, she’d forgotten. The drinks arrived after about twenty minutes, pathetic. By the time the kids got their drinks we’d decided never to go to Fishers in the City again.

Edinburgh Restaurant Review – Dusit, Thistle St – 31 May 07:
brilliant food, cosy venue, excellent friendly service

French Restaurant Review – 12 Apr 07:
Petit Paris, French bistro on Queensferry St: lovely cosy first floor space let down a wee bit by unwelcoming entry but mostly by unhelpful service, a real language barrier: please send the staff on courses to both learn English and politeness
