Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop – ESW
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop provide specialist facilities and creative opportunities for emerging and established artists within a supportive environment aimed at promoting research, collaboration and making. In tandem with our support for artists ESW promotes access to the arts through a public programme of courses, workshops, talks, tours and exhibitions and events.
Over the past 22 years more than 2,500 artists and 44,000 public visitors and participants have benefitted from our activities.

Development Plans
ESW moved to our current premises at Hawthornvale in 1993. Whilst the site and open grounds offered an ideal setting for a sculpture centre, the building itself an old railway warehouse was not designed for artistic or public use.
In order to provide the ideal venue for our day to day activities ESW is currently fundraising for new building which will be built on the open grounds of our present site. ESW has also been shortlisted for a £3million funding opportunity that would fund a second development, the ‘Creative Laboratories’, which would be built alongside the planned building.

Phase 1: Building the UK’s first purpose built public sculpture centre
The first stage in ESW’s ambitious development plan is to build a new purpose built public sculpture centre on our existing site in Newhaven.
Designed by award winning architects Sutherland Hussey Architects, ESW’s new premises will include specialist workshops, dedicated learning, project development, research and social spaces, 26 artist studios and two apartments for visiting artists.
ESW has already raised 93% of the £4.5million project cost including over £550,000 in private funding from individuals and trusts including the Dunard Fund, The Robertson Trust, The Foyle Foundation and The Henry Moore Foundation. In order to ensure the project goes ahead ESW needs to bridge the £315,354 funding gap by November this year.

Phase 2: Building the Creative Laboratories
An ambitious extension of our planned development, ESW is one of 3 arts organizations shortlisted for the Arts Funding Prize for Edinburgh. The single prize of up to £3 million funded by an anonymous donor is to create a new or refurbished building of both architectural and cultural merit that will be a home to artistic activity. The Scottish Book Trust and Edinburgh College of Art are the two other shortlisted candidates.
ESW’s proposal is to build an ambitious research & production facility alongside our new building. Significantly enhancing the planned facilities, the ‘Creative Laboratories’ would include dedicated research spaces and a dynamic outdoor arena to support ambitious research, sculpture production and cross disciplinary activity. Public walkways and viewing areas would add a major new dimension to ESW’s public programme and the building would also provide the city with a unique venue for events, performances and exhibitions.
Over the next 10 months, the three shortlisted projects will go through a rigorous development period with final designs and project details presented to the judging panel in April 2010.
The winner will be announced in June 2010. The Creative Laboratories complex is dependent upon ESW winning the Arts Funding Prize for Edinburgh.

ESW also an essential information point and meeting venue for curators, clients, public bodies and organizations looking to work with emerging & established artists.
The welcoming, accessible and inspiring environment ensures people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds have opportunities to meet artists, develop creative skills, learn about contemporary sculpture, engage with social issues and become more confident in participating in the arts.
Partnership working with arts, education and community organizations as well as hire of ESW’s facilities by external groups generates new audiences and partners.
