Ardua ; Holborn 4 Steel ; Olympic Construction: pictures from Michael Wolchover
"After a lifetime of producing documentary material combining still and moving images, I now concentrate almost exclusively on still photography, usually interpreting some aspect of the built environment for architects, developers and contractors. Increasingly, my photography seeks to reveal the content of things by exploring their form - a kind of benign abstraction.
A parliament ; Sugarhouse Close V: pictures from Michael Wolchover
Aided by the development of digital media, I am beginning to move away from client commissions into work for publication and exhibition. The pieces displayed here at Embo use images gathered from a number of more or less recent projects and assembled in a variety of configurations. They are presented as archival inkjet prints on fine art paper and available framed and unframed, unique or in small editions."

Present-day architectural debate and production in Switzerland is dominated by a tendency to indulge regressive traditional imagery. Hidden within a deeply rooted culture of consensus and in unquestioning accord with the demands of the market, conventionalist values are established in order to resist the equalizing power and the uncertainty brought by globalization. Thus current architecture epitomizes a morally motivated suspicion toward anything experimental or radical. In opposition, Rolf Jenni, Tom Weiss and Jan Kinsbergen share the conviction, that architecture is itself the frame within which alternative forms of life and visions for the society are revealed and debated. They push the boundaries of convention because they believe that it has always been radical disciplinary thinking that advances architectural production. Their critique is not limited to Switzerland. It is an analysis of a general culture of relativism that regards the individual creative endeavour as a reoccurring spectacle, rather than a means to progress.
Rolf Jenni and Tom Weiss established Raumbureau in 2008. They studied architecture at the University of Applied Sciences in Biel (Prof. Ralph Thut) and urbanism at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (Prof. Elia Zenghelis). They teach at the ETH Studio Basel Contemporary City Institute and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. In their practice they explore the field of architecture and its relationship with the city and the territory by means of a common and rational architecture.
Jan Kinsbergen studied Architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. He received his degree in Architecture in 1993 (Prof. Hans Kollhoff), worked for Steven Holl Architects in New York 1994-1999 and in 2000 established his own firm in New York and 2002 in Zurich. He has had teaching appointments at GSAPP Columbia University and ETH Zurich. His work has been exhibited and published internationally and nominated for several awards.

EDINBURGH SOCO
Thursday 8 Mar at 7.00 pm, Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge
Tickets £5
The Cockburn Association event
Proposals for the redevelopment of this site - SOCO Edinburgh - have attracted great interest since the devastating fire of December 2002. New plans were approved in December 2011 for a hotel and offices. Andrew Wright, an adviser to the developers for the recently approved plans, will take a look at the layered history of the site which saw the first battles played out in the 1780s as to who should develop the South Bridge. Subsequent changes came from the establishment of the retail empires of the silk mercers and from the 1867 Improvement Act, by which the fabric of the Old Town was transformed in the name of slum clearance.
This is a joint event by The Cockburn Association and the Old Town Association. Members & friends welcome.

GLASGOW: Working Drawing - The Hand Generated Image Masterclass 17 Mar 2012
“One can learn everything there is to know about an architect by studying their hand drawings, the degree of rigour and research that they bring to their projects, their attitudes and their sensitivities. It is no overstatement to suggest that hand drawing represents the stain of the true architect’s soul on paper.” Alan Dunlop
EDINBURGH Guided tour of Craigmillar Castle

Craigmillar is one of Scotland's most perfectly preserved castles. It began as a simple tower-house residence. Gradually, over time, it developed into a complex of structures and spaces, as subsequent owners attempted to improve its comfort and amenity. As a result, there are many nooks and crannies to explore. Of equal importance were the surrounding gardens and parkland, and the present-day Craigmillar Castle Park has fascinating reminders of the castle's days as a rural retreat on the edge of Scotland's capital city.
Access:
Parking: There is a car park surfaced with smooth tarmac with one accessible parking bay. The car park is next to the Visitor Centre. The Castle is reached from the visitor centre by a gently inclined 170m long tarmac path.
Monument (section by section): The Castle is situated on relatively level ground. There is a steep grassed approach to the inner courtyard which can be slippery in wet weather. The Castle courtyard is accessed via a stone stepped threshold. The Castle has five levels. The basement has a prison, cellars and bakery. The ground level contains the Dovecot, Inner Courtyard, Kitchen, Drawing Room and bottom level of the towerhouse. The first floor has a kitchen, old dovecot and bedchambers. The second floor has the great hall, wall walk and a kitchen. The third floor has the great hall gallery, and bed chamber. The fourth floor offers good panoramic views of Edinburgh. The levels are all linked by historic stone staircases, many of them turnpike ones. The steps are uneven, with all but one staircase having rope handrails. In bad weather several of the rooms can be dark.

EDINBURGH : 2012 Masterclasses
Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies, The University of Edinburgh
1st masterclass was on 19 Jan
The 35th session of the annual series of Architectural Conservation Masterclasses by leading national and international figures at the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies within Edinburgh College of Art, which now forms part of the University of Edinburgh.
Taking place in the transition period immediately following the ECA-UoE merger, the format of this year's Thursday evening Masterclass series will differ in some details from the previous arrangements. The series venue will be moved to a new and more convenient location within Edinburgh College of Art - the Main Lecture Theatre at the top of the principal staircase from the main entrance portico. In response to audience feedback the refreshment formula will be adjusted, with wine and nibbles replacing tea/coffee and sandwiches. Although the ECA-UoE merger has this year necessitated a slightly later start to preparations for the series, we will be mounting a full schedule of ten Masterclasses as usual: speakers and titles are listed in the schedule attached.
This year's contributors are acknowledged experts in their areas from the United Kingdom, France, Greece, Italy, Switzerland and Turkey. Each of these evening sessions will address a subject of major national or international significance within architectural conservation or cultural landscape heritage.
In reflection of the later start of semesters within the University of Edinburgh, the first Masterclass took place on 19 Jan 2012. The Thursday Masterclasses begin at 5.30pm, continue after refreshments at 6.45-7.15pm and finish by 8.15pm. There will be time for questions and debate at the end of each session. Light refreshments (wine and nibbles) will be provided in the interval.
The series is recognised for purposes of Continuing Professional Development.
