D3 - Aegon House, South Gyle, Edinburgh, Scotland Former Adobe Headquarters Building, 1998-99; 99-00 ![]() Edinburgh HQ interior: image from Lee Boyd Architects ![]() Aegon Asset Management Edinburgh: image from Lee Boyd Architects The D3 building is formed from four storeys around a central core with three atria within. The Aegon Headquarters offices are split axially into two in order to provide future occupier flexibility. The planes of blue granite that slide out of the building either side of the entrance and that form the bookends to North and south End Elevations, are very much of our time: their slicing of the building and puncturing by glass boxes and folded stone slabs have a sophistication akin to Benson & Forsyth's New Museum, but in a more restrained way. This approach is augmented by the fresh non-corporate feel of the lighting, typical of its creators, Jonathan Speirs & Associates: flush light'slots' in the core walls using an infinite range of colours, white soffit 'plank' lighting to the bridges and the floating reception desk all help to provide an evocative space. ![]() image from Lee Boyd Architects ![]() Aegon HQ Edinburgh: image from Lee Boyd Architects A high specification thoughout - with rock maple wall cladding, stairs and reception desk, with granite for the ground floor and elements already mentioned - makes the Aegon Headquarters a restrained but quality building.
