Apr 2010
The Scottish Charity, Autism Ventures Scotland, launched its first ever social firm, the gallery on the corner, in Edinburgh's New Town on Thursday 22nd April 2010.
Located on Northumberland Street, the gallery will provide retail space, an artists' studio area and apprenticeships in retail and creative art for 16 - 25 year olds with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). These apprenticeships will combine on-the-job and vocational training, resulting in a recognised qualification.
The art being sold in the gallery is produced by artists with a disability or who come from a disadvantaged background. The artists may have physical disabilities, mental health issues or ASC, or they may have experienced homelessness.
With the patronage of registered blind artist Keith Salmon, winner of the 2009 Jolomo prize for outstanding emerging artist, the gallery on the corner aims to increase opportunities and break down employment barriers for potentially vulnerable young adults.
Keith said: "The concept behind this magnificent new Edinburgh gallery really caught my imagination. It provides genuine employment and training to young people affected by autism, as well as offering a stunning space in which artists affected by all disability issues can exhibit and promote their work.
This is a truly inclusive gallery and I am delighted to be involved with what I am sure will be a very successful new business venture."
