Fly by seat of your pants...or get a marketing strategy?
The truest aspect to marketing is 'failing to plan is planning to fail'.
It is essential to promote any business at all times, and especially when there is less work around. There is an even stronger case for saying why you are the best architect for the job when competition for a diminishing amount of work hots up.
No one is denying that you have to be brave to invest in marketing in difficult times, but 'sitting on your hands', 'battening down the hatches' or 'flying by the seat of your pants' are even more unpalatable and ill-advised policies!
One thing potential employers expect to see of those they appoint is unwavering confidence in their own abilities and a 'business as usual' approach to getting things done. Start wringing your hands and complaining of a downturn and you will give off all the wrong vibes.
Two things are paramount - you need to have a plan for attracting work and you need to be in the strongest position possible to do presentations of your abilities and track record to prospective clients. In architectural practices, you could add a third key factor..that is, keeping close to allies in other professional property disciplines with whom you may form project teams for individual developments.
To survive the downturn, you need to come out fighting marketing-wise with a well-thought out plan to target those most likely to give work. Riding out the storm is NOT an option!
