New Scottish Executive Architecture Policy
An update makes sense but will the contents? Iain Gilzean as new Chief
Architect for Scotland and former head of the Architecture Policy Unit
is a safe pair of hands so I am confident the Policy update will be logical
and well-structured. But how will it tackle issues that damage our built
environment such as identikit housing, standard shop sheds, etc.? Scottish

Edinburgh Waterfront Walkway
Following blue sky designs by practices such as Sutherland
Hussey Architects for stretches of Edinburghs mostly appalling shoreline

around for years and reached a fairly detailed level back at the start
of the Ocean Terminal project 180107

Edinburgh City Council's Planning Sub Committee has deferred for one
week the planning amendment by Southside Capital Ltd for Quartermile

sum for 21 units would be payable by the developer; the agreed % of affordable

Lincrusta Cast Plinth

Upper Strand - decoration
came back in with a bang in 2005, flooding magazines such as Wallpaper
(eg Hotel Fox) and extolled by archimeisters such as Herzog & De Meuron
(who had in fact been experimenting with pattern for years) and the likes
of Caruso St John, used here in the discreet street-edge plinth by the
lower blocks:
"I like the lower four storey 'affordable' housing element. The stark
aesthetic works well here unlike the taller block which really needs the
irregular form to be palatable. It contrasts dramatically with the lower
block which is redolent of early modernism with the touchy feely romantic
twist of the lincrusta cast plinth." Gordon Duffy, Studio DuB

Edinburgh Tall Buildings Report
With the Colvin & Moggridge Skyline Study delayed many months
in 2006, CEC are now to mount a public consultation exhibition using images
of Edinburgh views defined by Colvin & Moggridge as significant,
to find out which vistas are key. But surely there is not the demand in
the property market for a significant amount of tall towers given the
slowdown in developments, such as Western Harbour and Edinburgh Park in
2006. Also, unlike London, most of Edinburgh's revered physical assets
- Edinburgh Castle, Calton Hill, Arthur's Seat - rise above the general
townscape and are less likely to be lost than the Tower of London or St
Paul's Cathedral. Is public consultation integral or merely a skin-deep
exercise? More details soon. 090107
