RIBA Awards
Debate rumbles on re inclusion of a 'Singing Ringing Tree' in Burnley
but exclusion of Zaha Hadid's first UK building. Gareth Hoskins wins but
shortlisted Richard Murphy and Malcolm Fraser Architects don't make RIBA
Awards short shortlist.
Compare Edinburgh and Cork: Edinburgh gained no RIBA National Awards yet
Cork, which isnt even in Britain of course, gains 3 from the Royal
Institute of British Architects. Edinburghs population is around
449,000. Corks population? Just 123,000. You could draw many conclusions
from this, that Scotland is under-performing or that the RIBA Awards system
needs changing, or you could of course simply (and logically) say evaluate
this over many years, a snapshot can be misleading. But, with a new system
in place that meant Maggies Fife didnt even make the starting line
(whatever you think about it) it is right to raise questions.
