hopes ‘the groundswell of public opinion will see this proposal thrown
out’…and questions ‘destroying the character of a place’.
Haymarket as it stands though has very little character at present, certainly
it isn’t very urban or indeed fitting for a major entry to a capital
city. Richard Murphy’s proposals create a strong and appropriate
sense of place. If you look at old photographs of the city’s edge,
such as Leith Street, there is a density married to bustling life. Edinburgh
needs to regain this. Allan Murray and Malcolm Fraser are quoted with
warmth.

Recently Scottish sustainability policy seems to have been following London’s
lead – eg the Merton Rule, issues of on-site energy generation and
carbon reduction. Ken Livingstone has now announced a requirement for
‘living roofs and walls’ on all major developments where feasible.

HSE Spot Checks
