Still a ‘Street of Palaces’?

Patrons Required
“Back in 1999, the Scottish Executive published a policy document on how to promote good contemporary architecture. More than 6,000 copies of the document were distributed in Scotland, the rest of the UK and continental Europe. More than 400 interested people attended public meetings to discuss it and 145 written responses were submitted – all positive signs that there was an interest out there in better architecture.
Since then, not a lot has happened. And there’s a reason for that.
Good architecture requires a good patron or it doesn’t happen. My house was commissioned and redeveloped (constantly) by politicians who, today, would be up before this inquiry or that one. But they had style and panache, unlike their contemporaries. They made great patrons. Brilliant architecture doesn’t come out of rules and regulations, only mad passion. Now who would like to design me that tombstone?”
