Edinburgh World Heritage
UNESCO / Caltongate debate
Following the visit of UNESCO’s director-general, Koïchiro Matsuura, to the capital debate has hotted up – he criticised Caltongate and Haymarket.
Richard Murphy (rightly) describes UNESCO as a “conservation mafia” and questioned Matsuura’s statements re Caltongate. “I suspect that this whole Unesco relationship is a cosy little club” and of course our design champion Terry Farrell aired his views (27 Aug) on BBC Radio. Joanna Blythman has waded in with some traditionalist reaction. Malcolm Fraser accused the Cockburn Association of leading a “toxic” wing of the heritage lobby in the city. And bizarre calls have been made to halt developments until UNESCO has made a decision in the Spring – as if the credit crunch were not already damaging the city enough.

Terry Farrell on Edinburgh
Sir Terry Farrell told BBC Scotland: “Edinburgh is changing…changes aren’t being welded together, the resources aren’t there to do it, it’s reactive, we are looking at each of the piecemeal bits and saying whether we like them or not. My view is this investment should partly come from central government, I don’t think it is putting enough into what is Scotland’s greatest city.”
