Focusing on housing expansion for Edinburgh & Lothian, 2000-15 Innovation Fund Edinburgh Contemporary Architecture to develop a run-down space into a Town Square for Haddington 12.04.02 Soiled Mile The Royal Mile is supposed to be a glorious mile of history and tradition, wonderful architecture and lively businesses which prove that the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town is still beating strongly. Instead, these days you’re more likely to remember it as being dirty and vandalised. 12.04.02 East Lothian News The draft Lothian Structure Plan has been branded ‘vague and non-specific’ East Lothian New Town 12.04.02 EICC Additional Spaces Facility Recommendation chosen from shortlist of five put before the Board: Edinburgh Conference Centre The Board of Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) on 19 March approved Building Design Partnership (BDP) as the lead consultant of the multi-disciplinary Design Team who will create the design of the EICC additional function space development project at the Morrison Street car park area adjacent to the EICC, known as site HI from the original Exchange Edinburgh masterplan. The cost of the new function space will be in the region of £25m and will be funded through the sale of rights to develop site HI above ground for the construction of approx. 15,000sqm of high quality prestigious offices, estimated to cost a further £25m. The subterranean extension will seamlessly join to the EICC's existing below street-level facilities. The next key milestone will be in the autumn of 2002 when detailed design plans (Stage E) have been agreed. Construction is on course to begin in the summer of 2004 with the development opening two years later. Calton Gate £100m mixed-use development at New Street Edinburgh receives detailed planning permission from City of Edinburgh Council: The development boasts a central location within the Waverley Valley and will create a new business hub comprising over 200,000 of office space, 55 apartments as well as retail/leisure opportunities. 21.03.02 Kininmonth & Spence house Superb architect-owned private house from the mid-30's (the glazed space over the garage is a recent addition by the architect-owner Ron Sutherland, only the second owner - pictures 1,4 & 8; in the '70s the house was extended to the East by Morrison Stephen - see pictures 2 & 5 and the house was restored by Hugh Martin in the '80s): description at modern houses 24.03.02 RIAS AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE Best Building in Scotland £25k prize donated by Andrew Doolan and Point Hotel Launched at Point Conference Centre, Edinburgh on 22 Mar RIAS Award for Architecture: Speech given by Gordon Davies, President of the RIAS and filmed by BBC Scotland VIEW: The launch - attended by Edinburgh Contemporary Architecture - was a considered and restrained affair. Views by Peter Wilson and Johnny Rodgers in the March 22 Building Design are useful in reminding us not to get too carried away with Scotland's standing in the world of architecture. The huge prize money and stellar 'international architect' for the judging panel bring much-needed confidence to Scottish architecture and will help put us on the map. Let's use this drive to reinvigorate our committment to improving our built environment - all of it, not just the architectural jewels. We've seen improvements in new galleries, museums and offices in the last decade but great swathes of the city are still impoverished with respect to their building design and facilities. Improving the 'sink' estates would not only save our embarassment when showing visitor's around our city but would cut crime and of course improve the lives of the people who live there. Now that we have one powerful prize for the best building, the numerous other Scottish Awards could perhaps hand out some gongs to people involved in city improvement, masterplans, community and housing initiatives. Among the projects expected to be considered are Edinburgh’s Oloroso restaurant in George Street, The Tun building in Holyrood Road, the Museum of Country Life in East Kilbride and Arbroath Abbey visitor centre.
