Meadowbank Stadium: Any Future?
Unlike the Edinburgh Baths featured below, this expressive (but rather leaden) building's future looks bleak as Edinburgh Council look to a new £49m sports facility at Sighthill in the west of the city, part-funded by sportscotland, due to go on site in 2009. The Council aim to make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020, quite a target. Meanwhile the Royal Commonwealth Pool by Robert Matthew looks more likely to be saved, and the Ratho Adveture Centre similarly looks set to thrive within the total £100m investment for sports up to 2020. Scottish Exec sets Green Standards
Micro Renewables: New housing and other developments should generate at least 10% of their energy on site from renewable sources, according to new Scottish Executive standards. This follows on from London standards set by Ken Livingstone.
Scotland is the first UK country to consider such a standard. The draft Planning Policy on Renewable Energy proposes local authorities designate areas suitable for wind farm applications and those that are not; greater account is taken of issues like natural heritage and cumulative impacts of wind farms on communities and local authorities support a diverse range of renewable energy technologies including encouraging the development of growing and new technologies.
The target is to generate 40% of Scotland's electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and reduce harmful carbon emissions

Sagrada Familia to use Scottish Stone
Stone from Clashach Quarry, Moray, is being used to complete parts of Sagrada Familia by Gaudi in Barcelona: a ceiling and a main staircase.
Sandstone from the quarry of Moray Stone Cutters has already been used in the construction of the National Museum of Scotland and the extension to the National Gallery in Edinburgh, as well as the 9/11 memorial in New York.
The contract will involve up to five tonnes of sandstone, with blocks as large as one metre cubed, being transported to Spain each month for the next two years to the temple site where construction work first began in 1882.
The quarry secured the contact after Moray Stone Cutters supplied sandstone for work on the nearby Barcelona Cathedral in 2005
