Haymarket Development
Proposals attacked by Gina Davidson in the Evening News as taking the ‘whole issue to new heights of architectural vandalism’…she hopes ‘the groundswell of public opinion will see this proposal thrown out’…and questions ‘destroying the character of a place’. Haymarket as it stands though has very little character at present, certainly it isn’t very urban or indeed fitting for a major entry to a capital city. Richard Murphy’s proposals create a strong and appropriate sense of place. If you look at old photographs of the city’s edge, such as Leith Street, there is a density married to bustling life. Edinburgh needs to regain this. Allan Murray and Malcolm Fraser are quoted with warmth.

Living Roofs & Walls

image © Adrian Welch
Recently Scottish sustainability policy seems to have been following London’s lead – eg the Merton Rule, issues of on-site energy generation and carbon reduction. Ken Livingstone has now announced a requirement for ‘living roofs and walls’ on all major developments where feasible. An example would be DSDHA’s Paradise Park School’s ‘vertical garden’
