Meadowbank Stadium

The wheels have truly fallen off the cart: keeping Meadowbank Stadium running (while the controversial redevelopment is put on hold) is costed at a whacking £12m. Building the smaller £25m sports centre required the existing stadium land to be sold. But that land costed at £17m, in today's depressed market is priced at... just £5m: Meadowbank Stadium
Velodrome Options

World Heritage Status Red Herring

picture from architect
As predicted on this site, Edinburgh's WHS is not threatened (if it was lost UNESCO would lose its leverage, simple). Unesco delegates announced this weekend that the capital's status was safe: Edinburgh World Heritage Status
The Haymarket : Public Enquiry

picture from architect
It looks like a crafty plan to both get through the economic downturn and try and appease the many detractors: the major Haymarket development faces severe delays and could be scrapped altogether after a public inquiry was ordered, despite planning being in place. However, whatever people might think about the style, density and height, this is more disastrous news for an already heavily depressed construction market.
'Imprisoned' : Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Debate

picture from architect
Dubbed 'crisis talks' by The Scotsman, a summit of council officials, development bodies and heritage groups is proposed to try to prevent major Edinburgh construction projects being derailed. Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Deputy chief executive Graham Birse warned Edinburgh faces being effectively "imprisoned" by its World Heritage status unless a major schism between conservation groups in the capital and developers can be resolved.
Cockburn Association
Office Manager required for Cockburn Association, deadline 15 Dec 2008
Princes Street Hotel

picture from architect
The first new hotel on Princes Street for 50 years looks set for redesign due to mounting opposition from heritage groups. Historic Scotland, Edinburgh World Heritage and the Cockburn Association all objected to the proposal to demolish two B-listed buildings on Princes Street to make way for £40m glass-fronted hotel & department store. Prospect Power 100

picture from architect
Congratulations to Gareth Hoskins who won Prospect magazine's Power 100 vote. The practice has had a very successful 2008 with the Gathering Space in Venice and Culloden Visitor Centre being shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival Awards. We hope Gareth's sophisticated St Andrew Square building (above) will soon see the light of day.
