The key recurrent theme again as in recent years is poor material weathering, followed by problems with overflows and finally lack of infrastructure. Staining is a major problem in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, whether it be from overflows - witness the rank brown staining on the backside of Rick Mather's Homes for the Future block - or lack of parapets - such as the Museum of Scotland north facade. White render was frequently stained on north-facing elevations leading various architects to question any usage in these situations even with good parapet detailing. Overflow staining would of course be avoided if a continental approach to shared boilers and internal routing were adopted. Finally lack of infrastructure was yet again mentioned re Glasgow Harbour - good transport links, clinics, shops, nursery, etc. The highlight this year appears to be Hazelwood School which has been praised for its good use of detailing, discreet forms and sensitive handling of function.
