Sustainable Placemaking : Information

An Australian Perspective

In Australia, where the population is expected to increase by 60% to 2050, to be accommodated predominately in a few coastal urban areas, there is considerable pressure on the natural and cultural landscape. However this growth provides an opportunity to create a sustainable development form.

Sustainability that embodies an equitable, humane and engaging future, is of particular importance in a country where there is only a relatively short history. While there are clear distinctions between new places, such as Australia and the UK, the essential ingredients for successful urban environments are similar.

The principles of sustainable urban development have been established for over 40 years and, while seemingly prosaic, they are often misinterpreted. The subtle interaction of urban design and land use patterns working within the realities of modern building typologies, together with the soft infrastructure to support the development of a community, creates a successful place. However, it is often the fundamentals that get lost in the lengthy planning and delivery process.

Christopher’s presentation will address some urban sustainability imperatives, drawing on projects from Europe, the UK, the USA and some Australian exemplars to illustrate the key issues.
