The restaurant is located in what used to be the Circus Bar & Grill, previously Round the World furniture shop and originally a Royal Bank of Scotland branch. Compared to the previous incarnation of this space the interior is fresh and airy. Citrus-coloured glass panelling enliven the interior, which is cleanly detailed and generally open plan. Run by the same family as Edinburgh's Centotre (George St) the service at Zanzero is as expected professional and the Italian-based menu contemporary and good quality. We skipped starters and selected two main courses: Pollo and Volare a chicken salad and a chicken-based pasta dish. The salad portion was generous and contained avocado. The pasta dish was well-balanced between the richness of sun dried tomatoes and small strips of chicken, brought together in a soft but tasty cream-based sauce, topped off with generous shavings of parmesan. Our Pinot Grigio came chilled in two curvy tumblers (that you might more normally hold a shot of Macallan or Courvoisier), refreshingly different but maybe not to every customers taste. Chilled water was provided out of a decanter that would not look out of place in a chemistry lab, but part of the same 'elegant contemporary' look. The organic theme one assumes comes from the soft asymmetry of the vivid curvilinear Zanzero logo, just like the citrus decor. Seated in one of the banquetted window nooks there was no distraction of overloud conversation but a good view over the open restaurant space, privacy, comfort and light not bad really! Acoustics seemed fine and the lunch arrived promptly with no fuss, the way it should be. In summary Zanzero came across as a fresh laidback restaurant with good food and good service, an delightful place to pop into for lunch.
