This place has a good reputation amongst Edinburgh & Lothians diners. A cosy group of rooms perched on the edge of the Forth with excellent service and fresh seafood.

We found service was attentive, especially at the start of the meal with water offered before we could request it and bread and water replenished again without us having to ask for it. The propietors served us with assistance from a younger waiter.

The decor is simple and matches wooden floors with whitewashed walls, plenty of traditional features, no trendiness but just classic Scottish homeliness.

The menu was the right length with mostly seafood but also duck or steak if you don’t fancy having fish starter and main.

For starters we had Cullen skink, Goat’s cheese, oysters and fishcakes. All four dishes were a hit. The oysters came with a raspberry wine vinegar alongside the traditional crushed ice and lemon.

For main we had King Fish, Lemon Sole, and two plates of Scallops. Again there were no problems but just good quality ingredients and cooking. The scallops were of the smaller variety but there were plenty of them. I prefer them to be more seared, with a light crisp, but that’s just me! Vegetables were refreshingly firm, certainly not overcooked.

For pudding we had Apple tart, Sticky Toffee pudding, Profiteroles and a Baileys. The latter didn’t arrive with the puddings sadly and had to be pestered for. The puddings were served on generous plates and dusted with icingh sugar.

All the food was presented in a straightforward way on the plates, matching the feel of the restaurant. The wine list was fairly extensive and felt right for this restaurant.

In summary we would go to the Boat House again despite fairly chunky prices because it combines some great ingredients: generally excellent service, lovely food and a beautiful view. The finale to the night was sitting back finsihing our second bottle of a good Bordeaux wine as the Forth Rail Bridge glowed in the dusk.

At time of writing the Boat House restaurant is closed on Mondays and open for lunch and dinner Tue-Sat (12pm-2pm; 5.30pm-10pm) with Sunday opening from 12.30pm to 8pm
