Museum CONTEXT Pops Up in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s first ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ for upscale home-interior accessories & gifts

Emerging international lifestyle brand CONTEXT Interiors has teamed up with Hong Kong Land to create a boutique style micro-department store destination for well-designed retro and vintage home interior pieces and inspired Christmas gifts. Located in The Landmark on Queen‟s Road Central, the store – Museum CONTEXT – opened in November and will remain open until 21st January 2012.

Carrying a thoughtfully curated mix of unusual objets including classic gifts for „hard to buy for men‟, high-quality furniture and unique home accessories, the petit pop up will undoubtedly appeal to the discerning customer with a taste for traditional, craftsmanship-designed items.

“We believe that Hong Kong is a great opportunity for us,” says CONTEXT Interiors founder and collection curator Andrew McRae. “The combination of the „treasure trove‟ store concept and the unique and distinctive collection of products that visitors will find inside is unprecedented.”

Upon entering the store, customers will be drawn to the eclectic displays of curios large and small highlighted by signature CONTEXT Interiors items such as the classic Marconi Spotlight Tripod Floor Lamp, the beautifully crafted vintage Marie Galante ladies make-up trunk, and hand-made solitaire sets that use individually blown Venetian glass marbles.

At just 500 square feet in size and as suggested by the store‟s name, the museum store ambiance and veritable cornucopia of beautiful and desirable items are designed specifically to give an authentic experience of discovery that is totally lacking in today‟s shopping experience.

Cockburn Street Shop

OLD TOWN – NEW DISCOVERIES

Lifestyle retailer Context Interiors has just turned three and to celebrate, has opened its second store – Old Town Context in Edinburgh’s Cockburn Street.

Formerly the site of Beyond Words, a well known and respected photographic book shop, Old Town Context is looking forward to joining the ranks of quality, independent retailers in the historic street. In keeping with its new location and the Cockburn Street vibe, Old Town Context is a quirkier ensemble of vintage and retro design compared to the classic ambience of its flagship store, Context Interiors at 79 Morningside Road.

What both shops do have in common is their focus on the eclectic and the new larger premises have allowed owners Andrew and Alice McRae (winners of the Emerging Retailer category at the Scottish Retail Excellence Awards 2009) to display their buying talents and their eye for the unusual on a grander scale.

Making a statement in the windows is a huge 1930s Marconi Spotlight and a scale model Baby Bugatti Type 35R racing car, whilst planes, propellers and paddles adorn the walls and ceiling along with oversize mirrors and industrial-style light fittings. Beatles memorabilia sit alongside Scallywag Cards and Flying Scotsman Flasks with local artwork provided courtesy of artist Ritchie Collins and illustrator Iain McIntosh.

It’s all part of the McRaes’ master plan as Andrew explains: “When we travel abroad we love browsing in unique shops and boutiques and in Cockburn Street we feel we can offer a similar experience. We hope visitors to Edinburgh and Old Town Context will find something different to take home along with their shortbread.

And, for residents we hope we’ll become a regular destination for gifts with a twist, accessories that will make them smile, an unusual birthday card and to soak up the old world atmosphere. We’re already stocking several new ranges which are exclusive to Old Town Context and it’s a trend we mean to continue. Our first shop was aptly described as an Aladdin’s Cave and as with Context Interiors in Morningside, in Old Town Context there will always be something new to discover….”

Context Interiors owner Andrew McRae said “It’s great that our passion for retailing and dedication to providing the highest standards of customer service has been recognised. Despite the extremely difficult trading conditions on the high street, every day we talk to customers who are determined to spend money wisely and support local businesses”.

Alice McRae adds “We are absolutely delighted to have received this award. We have tried to be innovative in terms of our assortment and shop environment. Within a modest space we are effectively a micro department store with over 1200 products focused on hard furnishings for the home and quality gifts”.

Another exciting development has been the launch of their online shop, www.contextinteriors.co.uk, which has a selection of their best selling products available to buy online.
