Edinburgh (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Èideann) is the capital city of Scotland. The conurbation is also one of its 32 council areas.

The second largest city in Scotland is located between the rivers Almond and Esk on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. It is found in the historic region of Lothian, bounded on its southern side by the Pentland Hills.

Edinburgh is the seventh-most populous city in the United Kingdom. It has been recognised as the capital of Scotland since at least the 15th century.

The city is the seat of the Scottish Government, the Scottish Parliament, and the highest courts in Scotland. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.
