Sensor Driven Computations for Emergency Response: FireGRID

15 May

Lecture Theatre 1, University of Edinburgh, Minto House, 20 Chambers St, Edinburgh

This presentation will describe FireGRID, a project that has as main objective to integrate computational models that describe fire behaviour, structural behaviour in fire and egress modelling to develop a tool to assist emergency response in the event of a fire.

The super real time and robustness requirements will be met by means of sensor driven computations using the GRID. Artificial intelligence techniques will be used to transform the complex output of the computations into command control decisions. Pre-analyzed scenarios and testing data (i.e. demonstrators) will be used to transform FireGRID into an educational tool.

During this presentation two demonstrators will be described, a simple upward flame spread model and a full scale fire test in a 27 storey concrete high rise building. In both cases simulations were used to forecast the outcome of the event and in the later tests, this information was used to minimize the growth of a fire by means of active control of the ventilation.

Speaker at this event will be:
José L. Torero – Building and Research Establishment Trust/Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Fire Safety Engineering at The University of Edinburgh, UK and director of the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering.
