Frank Gehry Architect for Maggie’s Centre & the late Maggie Keswick-Jencks

Frank Gehry was selected to design Dundee Maggies Centre by his friend Charles Jencks, and his former wife. Maggie Keswick Jencks had died of cancer, experiencing unwelcome situations in the National Health Service (NHS), and set about creating civilised buildings for people learning to cope with cancer.

This is the third Maggie’s Centre in Scotland; two more are planned currently (at the time of writing).

Founder Maggie Keswick Jencks used her own experience of having cancer to create a new type of cancer care. The first Maggie’s opened in Edinburgh in 1996, and we now have a network of centres across the UK and some abroad.

Designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, and built in 2003, Maggie’s Dundee was the first new-build Maggie’s centre. The white, cottage-like building with a wavy silver roof is modelled on a traditional Scottish “butt n’ ben” dwelling, and offers a welcoming sense of calm and sanctuary.

Architecture Awards for the Maggie’s Dundee centre:

– “Building of the Year”: Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland
– 2004 RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for Architecture (Nominated)
– 2004 Sky Arts Building of the Year

“I think it’s an inviting building, I think people will want to come inside and spend time there, and I really hope that in some small way it might contribute to a sense of rejuvenated vigour for moving forward and living life”.
