Gayfield Square Edinburgh Property

Four three-storey townhouses and gallery by Oliver Chapman Architects on Gayfield Square (the street extending beyond the square itself to the south).

OCA converted the former tyre garage on the awkward shaped site into a gallery, doggerfisher run by Susanna Beaumont, and artist studios in 2000.

The town houses have mostly first floor double height living rooms. The end house is raised a storey above the parking, which is tucked away and accessed from a side lane, and its living room looks south back towards the square.

Gayfield, typical of many nineteenth-century developing districts in Edinburgh, was part of a thriving scene of light manufacturing and creative industry: imagine the sounds and smells of print works, cabinet-makers, timber yards and paper mills all visible on maps of the time. Today, the area is home to many artisanal and design-related businesses and individuals.

Gayfield Creative Spaces itself comprises a series of venues and workshops geared to creative collaboration located in central Edinburgh in and around a former tyre depot just off this small public space.

Since 2001 the tyre depot has been re-developed and established as a venue for exciting artist-maker and gallery initiatives: a number of new talents have emerged as a result of this endeavour. With high-quality, cross-disciplinary collaboration, Gayfield Creative Spaces aims to:

explore where art and design meet health and well-being.
highlight where creative industry enables income generation for local communities.
provide a selling platform for emerging talent.
support international connections for Scottish designers and makers.
offer a focus for resource efficient design initiatives.

Gayfield Creative Spaces is upcycled from a former tyre depot to form a design hub for creative collaboration. We have sustainability and resource efficiency at the heart of much of what we are trying to do.
