The Howgate Restaurant

Old Inn with good reputation, and a real fire in Winter. We visited three times over around a decade and felt the food and service was of a decent standard.

Chubara, Indian Restaurant at The Quay, Musselburgh
I’d heard a new Indian restaurant had opened by the harbour in Musselburgh so we decided to forego the known pleasures of Haddington’s excellent Bangladeshi restaurant and check out Musselburgh’s finest. Located at the top floor of The Quayside entertainment venue the views across the sea are lovely. There’s also the chance of pre- and post-dinner drinks in the cosy bar downstairs.

We went as a family and had booked for an early slot soon after opening but felt nevertheless that service was slow at the start whilst the staff rearranged the tables, might have been best to do that prior to opening. You could really see the owner was trying hard here with an interesting menu and good quality crockery, condiments, etc. The menu is pricey though, around £11 to £15 per main course.

We tried something new and a classic – a Lamb Rogan Josh and a Lamb Ramaladh. The former didn’t taste like any we’d had before, very different to Kushi’s or the Eastern Eye’s or indeed any we’ve had in Manchester, London, etc. It was orange and creamy, more like a Tikka Masala. The lamb was too dry. The Ramaladh was stodgy, dominated by spinach and slightly perfumed, again the lamb was chewy and over-dry. After a few bites this became samey and lacking in depth. The children’s Dhani was fairly straightforward, bit like a Korma.

We felt the manager put too much pressure on us to have starters, extras, dessert and tea, he needs to chill out a bit and gently suggest options, but at the prices he’s charging he might not get too many takers!
Nothing ventured nothing gained, but I don’t think we’ll be back, we always have such a great time at Haddington’s Eastern Eye so although the view is great at Chubara we’ll leave it to others to dig deep for this dining experience by the sea.
