We post information about the £15 m luxury 180-bedroom Novotel Edinburgh on the corner of Lady Lawson Street and Lauriston Place, opposite Edinburgh School of Art, by Crerar & Partners:
Heritage watchdogs branded the Novotel Edinburgh hotel design dull and claim Edinburgh missed an opportunity to get a quality development on the site. Martin Hulse, director of the Cockburn Association heritage watchdog, said:

‘The nearby new office should be a benchmark for what can be achieved in the area, but I’m afraid Novotel Edinburgh looks a bit dull. There were no constraints over what could have been achieved, but an opportunity for a top quality hotel design has been lost here’.

Adjacent this accommodation is another recently-constructed hotel, Premier Travel Lodge. Just to north of Novotel Edinburgh is the Lady Lawson St residential project: Unite Student Housing.

Renaissance House

The gap site behind and beyond the Lady Lawson St tenement is in a state of flux: Planning Consent for an office development of 42,000 sqft, Renaissance House, was previously granted; more recently however, Planning Permission was granted for Unite’s Student accommodation proposals and this development – designed by Douglas Forrest Acanthus Architects – is incorporated into the submitted drawings.

Crerar & Partners were the Executive Architects on the Edinburgh Travel Inn project, alongside Andy Doolan Architects.

Crerar & Partners Architects other Edinburgh projects include the Caledonian Hotel at the top of Lothian Road.
