The Queen’s Gallery was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in Nov 2002. The gallery is the first permanent exhibition space in Scotland for the Queen’s ‘Royal Collection’. The gallery hosts exhibitions based on art, jewellery and furniture from the Royal Collection.

The gallery was designed by Benjamin Tindall Architects in the former Holyrood Free Church and Duchess of Gordon’s School. The Queen’s Gallery was funded by the Royal Collections Trust. The Duchess of Gordon’s School was designed by architect Archibald Simpson in 1846. The Holyrood Free Church was designed by architect John Henderson in 1850. Both buildings were disused by the end of the 19th century.

Near to the Queen’s Gallery is a new cafe bar with outdoor seating facing the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Park. Entry to the Queen’s Edinburgh Residence – where you can view the Royal Apartments – is behind the Queen’s Gallery, off The Strand.

The Caithness stone pavements with flush arc flush lights are almost finished, the queen is about to arrive, but here’s what papers had to say:

The Scotsman ‘The architects used the Queen’s Golden Jubilee as a theme for the gallery’s design’. 26.11.02

The Herald ‘The building is, in effect, a sequence of screens…soothing glass wall, designed by Jacqueline Poncelet, to arrive at a great, circular stairwell…This stairwell is Tindall’s most original conception, around which his whole scheme revolves’. 25.11.02
