Everyone and their dog seems to be an aspiring self-builder these days – which means all manner of exhibitions and events have sprung up to fill the information and knowledge void, plus to fuel a burgeoning market. Whether you’re looking for green materials, the best self-build mortgages, or bespoke designs, there’s pretty much an event to cover all architectural and design scenario. Here are the key events for 2011.
The Ideal Home Show | 11 - 27 Mar
The granddaddy of all home orientated exhibitions, The Ideal Home Show has been running for more than 100 years – bringing all manner of home orientated innovations direct to the hands of the public. The show brings together over 600 exhibitors from all over the country, including a few well known faces from the world of television, including Linda Barker, Diarmuid Gavin and George Clarke. Highlights include magazine room sets, a show home village, celebrity chef theatre, workshops and demonstrations, show gardens and central marina.
Grand Designs Live | 30 Apr - 8 May
Kevin McCloud has been advising via the telly for years now – taking us on journeys through other peoples building dreams and disasters. Show highlights include the Grand Village of eco show homes, lectures in the Grand Theatre, the Expert Advice Centre - which offers free 30 minute consultations, master classes in the Interiors Theatre, and Virgin Media House of the Future.
Green Build Expo | 29 - 30 Jun
One of just a handful of 'green themed' events in the UK - the Green Build Expo has established itself as the biggest sustainable event in the north of England, aimed at the public, trade and local authorities. Highlights include the 'Retrofit for Buildings' seminar, a workshop focus on the Renewable Heat Incentive, and a training hub, which will offer taster sessions delivered by some of the UK's leading providers.
Open House London | 17 - 18 Sep
What better way to garner architectural inspiration than by having a poke around inspiring buildings that are usually locked to public eyes? Open House London is a unique event that opens up a catalogue of doors in the capital – from iconic beacons such as Foster’s Gherkin and the British Library, through to lesser known residential enclaves including Golden Lane Estate.
100% Design | 22 - 25 Sep
The very best in International design presented under one roof – fourteen dedicated international pavilions showcase design from France and Norway, and as far afield as Argentina and Taiwan. The show is neatly divided into three arenas, with interiors at 100% Design, cutting edge surfaces at 100% Materials, and new, emerging talent at 100% Futures.
