Our news page carries images of the work by Zoo Architects in Wester Hailes, and Muirhouse (still on the board). It is imperative that Edinburgh continues to build good quality centres like this to encourage social cohesion and connectivity. The all-too-common complaint of '60s architecture was that the communities created had too few shops and services, weak focal points and little sense of community. Parallel to this is good quality housing and we will be commenting on the recent CEC document - City Housing Strategy I 2001-2006 I Consultation Draft - outlining approaches to affordable housing shortly.
Also on the news page, we report that Edinburgh's Waterfront development "could be put on hold until guarantees are given about permanent transport links to the site" according to the Evening News. This is something we broadly welcome: Edinburgh needs to show a clear committment to building sustainable communities and should clearly encourage public transport usage to be built into masterplans for new developments. There should be no get-out clauses in agreements with developers or else we go through the same old charade of broken promises witnessed elsewhere.
