Project: Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre Address: High Street, Peebles, Borders Architect: Richard Murphy Client: Borders 1996 Company Ltd Project cost: £2m Completed: Mar 2004 Eastgate Theatre Box Office telephone number 01721 725777 image by Alan Forbes Best Building in Scotland 2004 RIAS PR: A conversion of a 19th century whinstone church, to create a vibrant new arts centre in Peebles, consisting of foyer, café, artists' changing, office and performance space and a 240 seat flexible auditorium. The new façade of the theatre completely removed the entire side wall of the church, revealing the foyer inside and the timber box of the auditorium above it as a building within a building. The judges were impressed with the architects' solution for the Eastgate Theatre, retaining the front elevation and locating the entrance at the side of the church - creating what looks like a new building. They described the project as an excellent piece of urban design. images : Richard Murphy Architects Best Building in Scotland 2004 £25,000 prize donated by Andrew Doolan and Point Hotel 4 new Scottish buildings have been shortlisted for the much-coveted RIAS Award for Architecture - the UK's biggest architecture prize. The Best Building in Scotland judging panel - Gordon Murray, RIAS President; Professor Andy MacMillan, Emeritus Professor, Mackintosh School of Architecture; Malcolm Fraser of Malcolm Fraser Architects; and Finnish architect Hennu Kjisik of Harris-Ksijik Architects - visited buildings across Scotland over 3 days in September.
