The restoration and renewal removed the detitus of the 20th century – multiple lifts, and mezzanine floors within the great Telling Hall for instance – and thoroughly repaired and updated the building. The architectural aim of the work was not, however, primarily stylistic – the recovery of a look and arrangement, or the supplanting of the past with trendy modernity – but the creation of a modern, working headquarters that fully-used and valued the A-listed building. HBOS have particularly enjoyed demonstrating that the interests of the business and heritage communities can, with care, be shown to be the same.
