Project Description:
The former Bank of Scotland headquarters, now headquarters of the merged HBOS, has dominated and decorated the northern flank of Edinburgh’s Old Town for 300 years. The restoration and renewal removed the detitus of the 20th century – multiple lifts, and mezzanine floors within the great Telling Hall for instance – and thoroughly repaired and updated the building. The architectural aim of the work was not, however, primarily stylistic – the recovery of a look and arrangement, or the supplanting of the past with trendy modernity – but the creation of a modern, working headquarters that fully-used and valued the A-listed building. HBOS have particularly enjoyed demonstrating that the interests of the business and heritage communities can, with care, be shown to be the same.
