Edinburgh Council HQ New CEC Council Headquarters, Market St / New St, Old Town Building Design Partnership Spring 2006 Update re Edinburgh Council HQ: The Council HQ site is structurally complete, due to finish Summer 2006 Late 2004 Update re Edinburgh Council HQ: The Council HQ site is currently underway ie it's a building site. photo © Adrian Welch Sadly BDP Architects have not issued images of the Edinburgh Council HQ to this site despite a number of requests over the last few years. Proposed move from the High Street to 'purpose-built' building that sits in the valley, occupying land currently filled with various low brick buildings and car parking. No images of the CEC HQ have been released to the site but now it is emerging from the Planning stage I look forward to adding some. photo © Adrian Welch A model on display at CEC's 1 Cockburn Street Planning offices in May/June 2003 looks positive: the building lines Market Street and forms three fingers to the north enclosing two semi-roofed courtyards. The roof heights don't seem to be at odds with the context to the East (brick 'New St Bus Station', soon to be replaced by the Calton Gate scheme, pending ownership changes) and are a welcome replacement of what is there. The building will be a visible face to welcome visitors to Waverley and highly visible from points such as Calton Hill. photo © Adrian Welch The next step is surely to take the remaining surface car parks which have absolutely no place in the centre of a World Heritage Site (how have they managed to survive?) underground and replace with a great urban park. photo © Adrian Welch 'E-plan' fingers of CEC offices, at junction of Market St & New St, pointing north in eyesore car park - some underground - for City of Edinburgh Council, viewed by Cockburn Committee 20.05.02, planning decision 13.11.02: postponed.
