EAA Awards 2012 EAA 2012 Awards Submissions INTRODUCTION The EAA Awards are designed to create a showcase for the Architectural profession to demonstrate its skills and its contribution to the environment and the economy. The EAA Awards highlight the excellent work undertaken within the Chapter Area and by Architects in general. You are invited to submit nominations for these prestigious Awards. Short-listed entries will be displayed and the winners will be announced and presented with their awards at a special event in March 2012 which will be held in Edinburgh. An exhibition of all short-listed entries will also be held in the RIAS Joyce Deans Room at 15 Rutland Square. Entries for the following award categories are invited: Building of the Year (previously Silver Medal) Regeneration/ Conservation (previously Bronze Medal) Small Projects EAA Ambassador The criteria for each category are explained below. HOW TO ENTER: • Decide which categories to enter. • Complete an individual entry form for each project in each category. • Attach them to your entries ensuring that they are in the format outlined. • Enclose a cheque made payable to EAA for submission fee. • Return to: Beth Cumpstey, Edinburgh Architectural Association, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh EHI 2BE Entries to be submitted not later than 12 Noon Monday 16 January 2012 Please note that the announcement of the winning project and presentation of the EAA Ambassador Award will take place at a special EAA Awards event. Should the judging panel decide to withhold the Award for any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision. EAA AWARDS CRITERIA Category 1: Building of the Year A silver medal is given to acknowledge and publicise excellence in architecture for a completed project within the Chapter area. It may be a new building, an extension, an alteration or a conversion and it must have been designed by a Chartered Architect. No cost constraints are placed on this award. The Award is marked by the presentation of an engraved silver medal and accompanying Certificate. Commendation Certificates may also be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel. The award is made to the practice that carried out the commission. Submitted projects for the Building of the Year Award must comply with the following eligibility criteria: 1. The building (new-build, extension, alteration or conversion) must have been completed within the calendar year 1 January to 31 December 2011. 2. The building must be located within the boundaries of the Edinburgh Chapter area. 3. The building must have been designed by a Chartered Architect, not necessarily a member of the EAA. 4. Any type or scale of building shall be considered for this Award. Please note that the announcement of the winning project and presentation of the Building of the Year Award will take place at a special EAA Awards event. Should the judging panel decide to withhold the Award for any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision. EAA AWARDS CRITERIA Category 2: Regeneration / Conservation This Award complements the Building of the Year by making an annual award for a building within the Chapter area which has been sensitively and effectively restored, converted, regenerated, extended or refurbished by a Chartered Architect, thereby encouraging the successful integration of the old and the new. No cost constraints are placed on this award. The Award is marked by the presentation of an engraved bronze medal and accompanying Certificate. Commendation Certificates may also be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel. The award is made to the practice that carried out the commission. Submitted projects for the Regeneration / Conservation Award must comply with the following eligibility criteria: 1. The building (new-build, extension or conversion) must have been completed within the calendar year 1 January to 31 December 2011. 2. The building must be located within the boundaries of the Edinburgh Chapter area. 3. The building must have been designed by a Chartered Architect, not necessarily a member of the EAA. 4. Any type or scale of building shall be considered for this Award. Please note that the announcement of the winning project and presentation of the Regeneration/Conservation Award will take place at a special EAA Awards event. Should the judging panel decide to withhold the Award for any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision. EAA AWARDS CRITERIA Category 3: Small Projects The Small Projects Award is given to acknowledge and publicise excellence in architecture for a completed project within the chapter area with a contract sum of under £250,000. It may be a new building, an extension, an alteration or a conversion and it must have been designed by a Chartered Architect. It is hoped that this award will attract smaller practices to submit projects and gain recognition within the Chapter area and beyond. The Award is marked by the presentation of a Certificate. Commendation Certificates may also be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel. The award is made to the practice that carried out the commission. Submitted projects for the Small Projects Award must comply with the following eligibility criteria: 1. The building (new-build, extension, alteration or conversion) must have been completed within the calendar year 1 January to 31 December 2011. 2. The building must be located within the boundaries of the Edinburgh Chapter area. 3. The building must have been designed by a Chartered Architect, not necessarily a member of the EAA. 4. Any type of building shall be considered for this Award provided the contract sum is not more than £250,000. Please note that the announcement of the winning project and presentation of the Small Projects Award will take place at a special EAA Awards event. Should the judging panel decide to withhold the award of the Small Projects Award for any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision. EAA AWARDS CRITERIA Category 4: EAA Ambassador Award The EAA Ambassador Award acknowledges and publicises excellence in architecture for a completed project outside the Chapter area. It may be a new building, an extension, an alteration or a conversion and it must have been designed by a Chartered Architect working within the EAA Chapter area. No cost constraints are placed on this award. The Award is marked by the presentation of a Certificate. Commendation Certificates may also be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel. The award is made to the practice that carried out the commission. Submitted projects for the EAA Ambassador Award must comply with the following eligibility criteria: 1. The building (new-build, extension, alteration or conversion) must have been completed within the calendar year 1 January to 31 December 2011. 2. The building must be located anywhere outside the boundaries of the EAA Chapter area. 3. The building must have been designed by a Chartered Architect who is a member of the EAA. 4. Any type or scale of building shall be considered for this Award. Please note that the announcement of the winning project and presentation of the EAA Ambassador Award will take place at a special EAA Awards event. Should the judging panel decide to withhold the Award for any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision. GENERAL RULES OF ENTRY 1. The Awards in categories 1, 2 and 3 are open to any Chartered Architect (not necessarily a member of the Edinburgh Chapter) whose work has been completed in the Edinburgh Chapter Area. The Award in category 4 is awarded for a project outside the EAA Chapter area by a Chartered Architect working within the EAA Chapter Area. 2. The work must have been completed between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011. 3. Entrants must have their clients consent to enter the awards. 4. Entries must be received by 12 Noon on Monday 16 January 2011. All entries to be addressed to: Beth Cumpstey, Edinburgh Architectural Association, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh EHI 2BE 5. Each entry must be accompanied by a submission form and cheque made payable to EAA for the appropriate amount. Receipts will be issued on request. The entry fee is £25 per entry for Small Projects and £50 per entry for the Regeneration / Conservation, Building of the Year and EAA Ambassador categories. 6. Initial submissions should be as follows: o Each project should be accompanied by a single file in pdf format, reproducible as a single A1 board in landscape or portrait format, to include drawings, images and text to adequately describe the project. File size must not exceed 10MB. o Each submission should be presented on a clearly marked CD ROM with the name and description of content attached. Following short listing the EAA will request Al presentation boards of each project file initially submitted for exhibition purposes. High quality publication images may also be requested following short listing. 7. Entry material can be collected from EAA with prior arrangement by telephoning Beth Cumpstey on 0131 229 7545. 8. Whilst due care will be taken with entries, the organisers do not accept any responsibility for loss or damage of materials submitted. 9. The organisers reserve the right to publish and/or exhibit the entries in relation to the promotion of the awards. 10. Signing the entry form constitutes unqualified acceptance of the rules. Any entries which are found to be in breach of the rules will be disqualified and any costs may be recovered by the EAA. The Studio DuB design for the Bothy in the Borders, entirely reviving an ancient pile of stones, was described by one of the 4 judges, Ian Stewart (of BDG McColl) as a "Delightful reinterpretation of classic scottish vernacular - quite eclectic" by the judges but the Conservation and Regeneration category prize was won by an altogether more recent history, LDN's Business school which adds to the Robert Matthew university complex in Edinburgh, facing onto Buccleuch Place, LDN had three other buildings shortlisted in this category making it the most competitive section. In the Small Projects category there was no overall winner but Craig Amy received two Commendations for his shortlisted projects. Building of the year was won by Kingsland primary school in Peebles by Archial. Stewart remarked in his opening speech that the panel of judges of which 2 were architects, were unanimous in their selection, proving the strenght of the prizewinning projects. He also mused on the criteria they applied and concluded that the buildings had been judged on one main aspect: how they perform for the people- the users and clients- for the positive ways in which they had improved people's lives. Andrew was a passionate supporter of Scottish contemporary architecture and sponsored the annual RIAS Best Building of Scotland Award. Our guests can then enjoy a five course meal, followed by a short speech by Eva Jiricna, of Eva Jiricna Architects and the 2003 EAA awards presentation. We aim to have at least 400 guests at this year's event, with tickets on sale at £55 per head.
