East Lothian Hotels

Greywalls Hotel
Duncur Road, Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian
+44 (0)1620 842144
summer opening only

Lutyens-designed house, Gertrude Jekyll-designed gardens: like entering an Agatha Christie film. Decadent, charming and superb location but food lacking a level of finesse considering the heavy tarriff, or so I thought after my first visit. A second visit on the opening night for 2002 was delightful. Grey Walls Hotel, however is not about food [amongst my family], it's about being cosseted: you are welcomed into the Library for obligatory drinks before the roaring fire with views out to the sea. You are made to feel welcome. You are made to feel at home.

East Lothian Hotel
Brown's Hotel
1 West Road, Haddington
+44 (0)1620 822254

Another non-contemporary building - a large former private house on the main road into Haddington from the west. Service at Browns Hotel Haddington was very personal and rather unusual on our visit. The dining room is fancy and the food showy but one was left wondering what the fuss was about.
