Inverleith Terrace Lane House New Home by Zone Architects, Feb 2009 Zone Architects have secured planning permission for a new house on a spectacular gap site in Edinburgh’s leafy Inverleith. The site is on an undeveloped mews behind Inverleith Terrace which is currently used for car parking and as a pedestrian route between the Water of Leith and Inverleith Row. The house will sit alongside another by Michael Laird Architects which received consent in 2008. It is hoped the street will eventually become a terrace of unique houses designed by the best of Edinburgh’s architects as other owners realise the potential of their plots. The design of the house is a response to the City Council’s strict mews development policy where the requirement for a stone frontage is reduced to a perimeter frame. Within this frame a front garden is elevated to a narrow balcony at the upper level giving views to the Water of Leith. The house is designed for an investor and his partner, a couple who require an Edinburgh base for entertaining, working and gardening. Flexible and open living space is spread over two floors connected by a wide stair. Upstairs, the living room relates to the front garden whilst to the rear a more conventional garden is addressed by the kitchen and dining areas. The 160m2 house will be on site in the summer of 2009.
