Battersea Park: 3 Reasons to Visit
14 Nov 2019
Battersea has been a hidden gem of a district for a long time. Though very close to Chelsea, it lacked the name and cache of its neighbor. Mainly because it also lacked a tube station.
That’s all changing now and Battersea has become a prime destination for tourists and Londoners alike.
The park is right in the middle of an urban renaissance that is happening lately and is worth a visit.
Battersea Power Station is getting a facelift and will reopen after decades of idleness. Embassy Gardens apartments are becoming a hot address of late. There just seems to be a modern vibe that is attractive.
If you plan to be in the area, make time for a visit to the park. Here are three reasons you should.
1 – A green oasis in an urban area
The park itself is like a breath of fresh air in the middle of a bustling city. With views of the Thames, it is an ideal location to plan a picnic and watch the boat traffic slowly pass by.
For families, it provides a welcome break for the kids after a long day of sightseeing. There is an adventure park with swings, slides and climbing nets to keep them occupied. A pond in the middle of the park offers pedalos for a relaxing ride across the water for kids and adults of all ages.
The park is well manicured and maintained. Flowers and plants of all varieties are there to be admired amidst a backdrop of downtown London. It may not be as grand as the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh, but it adds a nice splash of color.
2 – The Children’s zoo
One of the best attractions in the Battersea district as a whole is the zoo. It is not very big, it is part of a public park, after all, but it makes up for it with charm.
Kids can learn about typical barnyard animals like sheep, goats, and chickens, but there is a whole host of other exotic animals as well.
Lemurs, Asian short-clawed otters, meerkats, monkeys, emus and many tropical birds are there to delight kids of all ages.
When the kids need a bit of running around to burn off some energy there is a play area with plenty for them to do. There is also a picnic area and a gift shop.
3 – The Pump House Gallery
Fans of art and architecture will enjoy the art exhibits at this gallery. Set in an elegant Victorian building that pumped the lake with water, hence its name, it is an ideal location to highlight the work of many local artists.
The focus is on contemporary work from paintings to photography. There are events at least six times per year so try to plan your visit with an exhibit of your favorite type of art.
After touring the park, you are well-positioned to enjoy the rest of the district with bars, restaurants and cafes.
