STRETCH CITY: Fine Artworks by Jill Calder
Jill Calder, well known for her illustration work, received the RIAS Award at last year’s Visual Arts Scotland Annual Exhibition. The result is this show of large scale drawings and paintings completed after several trips to Las Vegas and the surrounding desert. The impact on the artist of the colour, geometry and architecture of this unique location are described in energetic style as she explores the complex relationship between the inhabitants, the visitors and the environment they choose to work and play in plus the tensions that very often arise from that.

RIAS Gallery, 15 Rutland Square, Edinburgh
Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm
‘Wood for good’, the largest single timber industry promotion ever mounted in the UK, targeting both trade and consumer audiences initiated an open ideas competition in partnership with the RIBA in April 2003. The competition was open to students of architecture and related disciplines.

Competitors were invited to submit designs for a challenging central London site, Gabriel’s Wharf, that demonstrated the innovative use of timber as a contemporary building material and pushed the boundaries of current thinking about sustainable development in an urban context.

Generalism Enacted II, an exhibition by Fergus Purdie Architect, Perth
Solo exhibition by individual practitioner Fergus Purdie, Architect. The practice ethos belongs firmly to the Scottish tradition established by Professor Patrick Geddes in terms of principles, approaches and working methods. In doing so, the exhibition’s work in the form of drawings, models and text, seeks to interpret the interface between practice, research and teaching. The outcome is an evolutionary process redefining our professional identity within contemporary practice.
