Missoni – the name of this prestigious Milan fashion house conjures up images of a skilled use of many tones and shades: a minutely applied, perfectly controlled riot of colour. Used in tone upon tone and tone against tone, the Missoni approach to colour gives its products an unmistakably strong character of their own that is instantly recognisable the world over.
Matteo Thun and Partners débuted for Missoni with the commission to design one of its main flagship boutiques, on New York’s prestigious Madison Avenue. The method adopted in exclusive locations all over the world is now also being applied to create the very first Missoni Hotels, in Edinburgh and Kuwait City.
The quality of the preparatory thinking, the choice of materials and the final result are every bit as painstaking as selections by Missoni of colour schemes: the apparent simplicity of the result merely conceals the complexity of the process. In addition to developing a model capable of being reiterated, with suitable variations, in a variety of locations all over the world, in a manner comparable to the philosophy adopted for the Missoni boutiques, the partnership is currently putting the model into practice in the interior design, styling and lighting design in two locations.
In the 8,630 m² Hotel Missoni building in Edinburgh, Matteo Thun & Partners are working on 129 rooms, seven suites, the bar, restaurant and conference facilities; in the larger (23,100 m²) hotel in Kuwait City, the studio’s focus is on 176 hotel rooms, 31 suites, lounge, lobby, restaurant, rooftop restaurant, ballroom, five meeting rooms, a café meeting room, a spa area and the outdoor swimming pool area.
– Architecture as sartorial work: Missoni colours and lifestyle combined with MTP’s hospitality development expertise.
– A clear and flexible idea of hospitality: repeatable and declinable accordingly to local habits.
– Colour schemes and fabric patterns to match the location mood and the functional areas: black, white and silver for the 129 rooms and 7 suites of the Edinburgh business hotel.
