Opal Lounge #2
Montpeliers, owners of the Opal Lounge and ricks, have proposed a £5m boutique hotel at 125 George Street. Montpeliers submitted a planning application with Edinburgh council to build a 33 bedroom hotel and cocktail bar, restaurant and a private members’ lounge.
The five-storey Georgian townhouse, which has been lying empty for nine months, was formerly an office occupied by Standard Life. The new hotel is aiming for the top end of the Edinburgh Hotel market.
Montpeliers is the Scottish leisure group that owns the Opal Lounge, Rick’s, Indigo Yard, Assembly and Montpeliers of Bruntsfield, all in Edinburgh.
Around 100 jobs should be created by Montpeliers through the conversion. If planning permission is granted for this new Edinburgh hotel, the development should be completed in 2005. The George Street site is being leased by Montpeliers from Lorne Properties.
Montpeliers is working on 125 George Street with the Edinburgh area practice Kerr Blyth Associates.
Architect Kerr Blyth refurbished The Iguana bar in Edinburgh’s Bristo Square, renamed as Assembly and worked for Malcolm Fraser on the Opal Lounge. Other Kerr Blyth projects in Edinburgh include Halo.
The Opal Lounge was opened by Montpeliers in Feb 2002
Opal Lounge Edinburgh – build cost approximately £2.2m
There is also an Opal Lounge in London at Swallow St, it is also a London Nightclub. Also in Solihull there is an Opal Lounge on The High St, again a nightclub.
