Edinburgh based TAP Architects has received planning approval for a pool house extension to a private residence near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.

Set within a 1.9-hectare woodland site, the proposal forms the latest phase in the ongoing transformation of a modest 1990s bungalow which is currently being renovated and extended.

The new addition is positioned at the western edge of the house and rotated 45 degrees from the existing building. This shift aligns the extension with a clearing in the surrounding trees, allowing the structure to be embedded in the landscape and helping to define a sheltered, south-facing garden.

The pool house contains a swimming pool, spa facilities and a guest bedroom, arranged beneath a vaulted roof with a linear rooflight. Internally, the space is defined by a simple, open volume, with large areas of glazing framing views out to the woodland.

A restrained material palette of timber cladding, render and aluminium echoes the existing house while reinforcing a contemporary, rural character. The design also incorporates passive and low-energy strategies, including photovoltaic panels, ground-source heat pumps and a highly insulated envelope.

The proposal has been carefully developed to minimise impact on the surrounding woodland, with the building footprint and construction approach designed to protect existing trees and root systems.
